Call for Art - Fire and Water
September 5th - October 5th
The Mary Cosgrove Dolphin Art Gallery is seeking artwork that uses Fire and/or Water as a main element in the creation process.
The Elements of Fire and Water are often seen as opposites, antithesis elements of creation and destruction. In truth, they are both. Fire, when out of control can burn through whole towns, whole forests, but it is that same destructive force that can also pave the way for new life, clearing away old growth to make space for new, providing heat that some seeds need to move into the next stage of life. Water is required by all living things yet it has immense power and destructive capabilities, drowning miles of land, leaving complete destruction in its wake while at the same time the force of water can carve the very earth, creating new pathways, new formations, new earth.
For artists, these two elements are essential to creating. Fire added to materials like clay or metal or wax becomes a catalyst, changing the materials physical and molecular properties. Water when added to pigments, paints and fibers becomes a carrier, a pathway to new images, new processes and new stages of creation.
This call is focused on material and process in regards to Fire and Water. We are looking for artworks that use Fire and/or Water as main elements within their creation. Possible material options include (but are not limited to) Ceramic art, Metals, Glass, Wax, Water color, Wet felting, Plaster, etc.
We also ask that with art submissions, all artists submit an Art statement that includes a short description of their process and how Fire and/or Water was integral to the creation of their work.
